I have a soft spot for ginger tabby cats because of their charming and friendly personalities. However, female ginger tabbies have a certain sassiness that makes them stand out from male ginger tabbies. Pumpkin, a lovely senior ginger tabby cat, was discovered alone and scared when she was younger. Despite her difficult beginnings, she knew that fate was on her side. Since being found just before Halloween, Pumpkin has blossomed into the most delightful little furball. While we may never know her past, she has been the beloved companion of her adoring owner for more than a decade.
Could you share how you came to have Pumpkin as a part of your life? In October of 2009, I attended the wedding reception of a close friend. Upon leaving the party around midnight, I spotted something scampering beneath parked cars in the hotel lot. Without hesitation, I got on my hands and knees, still in my bridesmaid dress, and spent a half-hour luring the little creature out from under a car. Eventually, I was able to scoop her up and take her home. The next day, I brought her to the humane society. Initially believed to be male, I knew she was undoubtedly female. After being cleared for adoption, I welcomed her into my home for good. How did you come up with the name Pumpkin? As it was mid-October, only two weeks before Halloween, and because she was a brilliant orange hue, I christened her Pumpkin.
How would you describe her personality? She’s an independent and determined little creature with a strong will! She also has a great love for food and is always on the lookout for any opportunity to snag a bite from your hand or plate. I endearingly call her my chubby and spirited monkey. What activities does she enjoy? Other than her food obsession, she thoroughly enjoys going on walks outside with her harness, but this is limited to certain months due to the inclement winter conditions in our region. I initially began taking her for walks to keep her active and maintain a healthy weight. She also relishes sitting on the cat tree by the back door to observe the wildlife outside during the day or napping in the bay window while gazing out at the world. In her golden years, she’s become more affectionate and loves nothing more than cuddling on the couch at night. Does she share her home with other animals? Yes, she coexists with four other cats and a free-roaming rabbit. Although she gets along well with her feline housemates, she values her solitude and prefers her own company or the undivided attention of her human.
Want to hear something special about my cat, Pumpkin? Well, she’s a bit high-maintenance. When she was young, Pumpkin was diagnosed with a heart murmur and Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), which is an abnormal thickening of the left heart ventricle. Even though the thickening was mild initially, the vet informed me three years ago that it had become severe. Despite this, Pumpkin is still doing great, and I cherish every moment I spend with her. Along with her heart disease, Pumpkin has incredibly thick fur, and I need to give her haircuts twice a year to prevent mats from forming. She is also susceptible to urinary crystals and constipation, which are uncommon in female cats. To keep these problems at bay, she requires a prescription urinary and high fiber diet. Moreover, Pumpkin suffers from anxiety and has been on fluoxetine for a few years now. Despite all these difficulties, I love her dearly and wouldn’t trade her for anything.
